Prepared to be Wrong
by Lisa Lynne Mathis © 2006
In my personal journey as a woman of faith (left-leaning but label despising) I have come across a great deal of mean-spirited exclusivity and bad behavior. People of faith disagree a lot: being right or wrong about what every single passage of Scripture means misses the point and only divides and prevents us from giving the best of ourselves to the world. I am absolutely prepared to be wrong about my understanding of faith. Love is not a Hallmark-card sentiment when you commit to follow Jesus. It means reaching across every divide to embrace, accept and treat with nothing but grace and mercy, as we have been treated, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, impregnation out-of-wedlock, incarceration … I’m willing to risk being wrong about a lot if it means chosing Love.
I got the call at 10 p.m.
He’d been rejected once again
He asked me if I knew the reason he was not allowed to pray
With us
She left the doctor in despair
She could not think of anywhere to go
Her face was scarlet as she sat in the back pew and asked me why
They made her cry
And I don’t know
But I can’t see
How we are living in the light faithfully
So I will stand on my dying day
I’m Prepared to be Wrong
But I choose Love
I brushed right by them on the street
Caught a glimpse of tiny feet
Out came a sound that cut me to the quick
And forced me to look back
And turn around
We all rise for Closing Hymn
Feeling righteous and absolved of all our sin
Out we go into the world and act like nothing’s even changed
Just in name
And I don’t know
But I can’t see
How we are living in the light faithfully
So I will stand on my dying day
I’m Prepared to be Wrong
But I choose Love
There’s no undoing all the damage that’s been done
All this talk about the hearts that you have won
What for? What for?
Don’t know about you
But I can’t see
How we are living in Your light faithfully
I will stand on my dying day
And I’m prepared to be wrong
I’m prepared to be wrong
I’m prepared to be wrong
But I choose Love
